Let's Talk Condoms.
Use them. Always. Latex or non-latex, flavored or glow-in-the-dark, they are one of the keys to preventing transmission to your sexual partner(s). I also should add that natural condoms, which are made from the tissue of sheep or lambs (commonly called lambskin or sheepskin condoms) DO NOT protect your partner (or you, for that matter) from contracting STDs. That's because the pores of the membrane of these types of condoms are large enough for the herpes virus (and others!) to pass through. So, stick to latex (or non-latex if you have a latex allergy). That being said, even if you aren't having an outbreak, you could still pass on the virus to your partner, so use a condom every time you have oral or vaginal sex.
